Quantitative Methods · Total Return

Try a question on Total Return

The lesson above ends on the formula you need. Pick an answer to see the working.

An investor buys a share of stock for USD 25.00, receives a cash dividend of USD 0.75 during the year, and sells the share at the end of the year for USD 26.50. The investor's total return for the year is closest to:

Ask your AI tutor about any step

Ask AI explains the lesson step, Study Notes passage or question in front of you, using Quizara's course content. It does not reveal answers to questions you have not answered yet.

Why do we divide by the starting price?

Because a return measures what you earned on the money you put in, and the money you put in is the price you paid at the start, P0P_0.

On the board, the income share was bought at GBP 25.00, ended the year at GBP 24.75 and paid GBP 1.75 in dividends:

r=24.75−25+1.7525=1.5025=6%r=\frac{24.75-25+1.75}{25}=\frac{1.50}{25}=6\%

Divide by the year-end price of 24.75 instead and you get about 6.06%. That is no longer the return on the GBP 25.00 you invested.

Practise your weakest concepts

Each practice set is marked as you go, with the working for every answer. Start the next set with Weakest first and it opens on the concepts you know least.

When you're ready, sit full mock exams: 180 timed questions in two sessions.
